Taking A Close, Much Closer, Look At Insects

roach

Have you ever seen a German cockroach or drywood termite up close? Not exactly things of beauty for most folks but I think it is pretty cool! As long as there’s no threat, who doesn’t like to look at insects – they are just so interesting.

For bug aficionados like me and my colleagues at Western Exterminator, taking an up-close look at insects is part of our job on a daily basis, and we find these critters quite fascinating. For our customers, however, getting close to insects is sometimes more un-nerving.   When it happens they rarely take the time to study the insect, they just call us for help!

Each year Western Exterminator Company receives thousands of calls from customers in Arizona, California and Nevada saying, “I found this bug and I have no idea what it is!  Can you help?”  And the answer is of course, “yes, yes we can.”

Proper insect identification is essential for any pest management professional looking to solve a customer’s insect problem. Without knowing exactly what insect is present, trying to eliminate or prevent it from entering a home or office, and developing an effective control plan is next to impossible.

Our Technical Department at Western Exterminator is second-to-none and we’ve just added an additional All-Star to our already talented team of entomologists and sanitarians. However, this All Star isn’t a person but a microscope – the Nikon SMZ 745T.

This isn’t your junior high biology class microscope, according to C.J. Strom, Associate Certified Entomologist and Western Exterminator’s vice president of quality. This is one powerful piece of machinery that can zoom in on an insect at 500X. Now that’s close up!

According to Strom, with that type of power and detail Western’s technical gurus can even more closely pinpoint the exact type of ant, cockroach or spider that is bugging you. This high-tech lens craft also takes high-resolution, detailed photos of insects, which enables us to share through e-mail digital photos with our Technicians and customers. It’s sort of like facial recognition software for insects!

In 2011, our Technical Department handled more than 1,300 insect identification requests, and our newest addition to the team will help us do the job faster and with even greater accuracy.  And just for the fun of it, who doesn’t want to see a picture of a bed bug magnified 500 times?

Of course, most importantly, the information provided helps our Service Technicians make recommendations and design a treatment plan to assure your home or office is pest-free!

Do you have questions about an insect you’ve seen in your home or office? If so, I want to hear them. You can send me an e-mail at AskMrLittle@WesternExterminator.com. I’ll be sure to get back to you right away with an answer.

Western Exterminator – 91 Years Young
 and Still Going Strong

since1921

If you were like me, you really enjoyed this year’s Super Bowl. What a game! And what a spread of food I enjoyed at the party I attended. From burgers to sushi – there was enough for two or three tailgate parties!

As I watched the trophy presentation after the game and the Mara family (they own the New York Giants) was awarded football’s biggest prize, it occurred to me that Western Exterminator has something in common with the newly crowned NFL champion.

With a little help from Google, I found out the Giants were founded in 1925 by the Mara family. That is four years after Western Exterminator founder Carl Strom set up shop in Los Angeles to rid Southern California of unwanted, unhealthy pests.

I found it interesting that for all those years both the Giants and Western Exterminator have been family owned enterprises. Both organizations have earned the respect of competitors and peers alike for being honest, hard-working, first-class organizations. And both are champions in their respective fields of play.

In 2012, Western Exterminator celebrates 91 years of protecting homes and business throughout California, Arizona and Nevada. What started out in a simple office with a desk, a phone and $25 in chemicals, has grown into an organization of nearly 900 dedicated professionals who come to work each day looking to deliver Carl’s vision of delivering quality customer service at a fair price.

A lot has changed over the years when it comes to preventing and eliminating pests from invading your living or work space. Treatment methods have evolved to allow greater respect for the environment while still conquering invading nuisance pests.

We want to protect you and your family from the unwanted pests that can cause thousands of dollars in damage to your home’s wood structure (termites), transmit disease (rodents and cockroaches) or that are just simply a nuisance (ants, fleas, bed bugs, you name it!). However, we want to do that with the least impact on the environment as possible, and continue to commitment ourselves to doing just that.  That is the mantra of our Technical Division, and our staff.

And amidst the changes in technology, products and treatment methods, you can be assured that the core values that were present at the beginning are still paramount to us today: quality service, dedicated people, fair value, loyalty, and a promise to stand behind our work.

What else would you expect from a champion?

Do you have questions about Western’s service offerings and how we can help you get rid of your pests? If so, I want to hear them. You can send me an e-mail at AskMrLittle@WesternExterminator.com. I’ll be sure to get back to you right away with an answer.

Dedicated To Our Customers;
Dedicated To Our Profession

When I arrived at Western Exterminator I was a newbie to the pest management industry. I knew not to get my hand to close to a snap trap and that ants were more than just invaders of picnic baskets, but that is where my pest management knowledge pretty much ended.

What I did have, however, was my top hat, my handy mallet and most importantly a strong interest to learn the skills on how to become the best pest management professional possible.

And most of my talented colleagues at Western Exterminator start their careers with the company much like I did – from the ground up, always learning, living up to our mission of delivering exceptional customer service each and every day, and displaying a keen acumen for killing pests!

While we attract team members from a variety of backgrounds, recommendations from current employees serve as our best recruiting tool. Did you know we have many 3rd and even 4th generations of the same families here at Western? A tip of my top hat to that!

No matter how or from where they arrive, they are welcomed into the Western “family” and learn from day one that customer satisfaction is the top priority, and that learning never stops. That’s the key to our success. We are always staying abreast of the proven newest technologies in problem pest solutions.

In fact, I learn something new almost every day when I am around our talented technicians and entomologists. Just recently, Honey, our expert bed bug detecting canine shared some really interesting stuff on how to find bed bugs. Let’s just say she has a real nose for her job.

Do you have questions about what it takes to join the Western family? If so, I want to hear them. You can send me an e-mail at AskMrLittle@WesternExterminator.com. I’ll be sure to get back to you right away with an answer.

Mr. Little Shares His
New Year’s Resolutions

fireworks

As the ball drops on 2011 and we usher in a New Year, I would like to extend, on behalf of the entire Western Exterminator family, a happy, healthy and, above all, pest-free 2012 to you and yours!

We appreciate that our customers have entrusted us to protect their homes and business from unwanted, unhealthy and at times destructive pests. Creating a safe and healthy environment where pests are not welcome is the goal my colleagues at Western Exterminator and I dedicate ourselves to each and every day.

Celebrating a New Year also means making resolutions. And while I do resolve to visit the local gym more frequently than I have in the past few weeks (this year’s Western Christmas party had so many tasty things to choose from!), here are my 2012 resolutions for delivering a pest-free environment for your home or office.

Resolution # 1 – Put the full force of our talented technical experts behind solving your seemingly impossible (and the simpler ones too!) pest problems. We have some of the most knowledgeable entomologists, sanitarians and inspectors in the business in your corner.

Resolution # 2 – Make sure you are 100% satisfied with our service and that we exceed your expectations. We’ve built our reputation on delivering the highest quality customer service and for some reason if you aren’t satisfied, I want to hear about it and we’ll get it fixed ASAP.

Resolution # 3 – Continue to provide our Service Technicians with the latest in technology and training on how to most effectively eliminate pests from your home and business. I have worked in the field with many of our Technicians and I can promise they’ll get the job done right the first time.

Resolution # 4 – Make a positive impact in the communities Western Exterminator serves. From supporting the Spider Pavilion at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County to appearing at local community events (and our Western company picnics!), I want to be there and let people know Western cares.

Resolution # 5 – Do my very best each day to help our customers live a nuisance pest-free life. Whether it is a getting ants out of your kitchen, a scorpion off your patio, bed bugs out of just about anywhere or bees out of your bonnet (or your chimney!), I will continue sharing tips with you throughout 2012 on how to live a pest-free life.

Do you have questions about insects or about Western Exterminator? If so, I want to hear them. You can send me an e-mail at AskMrLittle@WesternExterminator.com. I’ll be sure to get back to you right away with an answer.

Take A Bite Out Of Bed Bugs

honey

As you know I really enjoy talking about my colleagues at Western Exterminator. They are the most talented and hard-working pest management professionals you’ll find, and they certainly deserve recognition for their many contributions in keeping homes and businesses pest-free.

Today, I want to introduce you to our first four-legged colleague, Honey. Honey is a two-year old dark chocolate Labrador retriever and she has assumed the title of chief executive bed bug sniffer-outer for Western Exterminator.

With bed bugs being a resurgent and very large problem for both business and residential customers, we needed a top-notch inspector to find where these pesky little critters live. And while we have some very good two-legged inspectors on our team, Honey, and her well-trained nose, is paws down best in class.

Scientifically, it is proven that Honey’s prowess in seeking out bed bugs is the cutting-edge technology in the current battle with these nasty critters. As they say, the nose knows!

Honey and her trainer, Lauren Small, came to Western after completing their training at the Falco K-9 Academy, which also trains bomb and drug sniffing dogs for police and sheriff’s departments across the nation, as well as the California Department of Food and Ag and Disneyland.
Lauren and Honey are great additions to our team. Honey is an especially hard worker who enjoys greeting customers with a friendly bark and a continuously wagging tail.

To Honey sniffing out bed bugs isn’t a job – it’s a game of hide and seek. It’s a game she likes to play and one she doesn’t like to lose! Since Labradors are natural hunting dogs, she has built-in instincts for tracking down quarry making her the perfect dog to hunt down those nasty bed bugs!
When she enters a customer’s home or business to search for bed bugs, Honey’s keen sense of smell takes over. She’ll search top to bottom to see if bed bugs are present and if she finds them, its game over. Western’s highly trained Service Technicians take it from there and develop a customized treatment program that eliminates bed bugs for good.

Lucky for us, Honey has agreed to be an occasional guest blogger and we’ll find out what her nose knows about bed bugs!

Celebrating 25 Years of Dedication
and Commitment to Customers

25years

Who doesn’t love a good party? I certainly enjoy one and today we have a good reason to take out the noisemakers and eat some cake at Western Exterminator (I prefer double layer chocolate cake with extra frosting just in case you were wondering!).

Why the celebration? Because today we recognize a group of long-time, dedicated Western Exterminator employees who in 2011 celebrated 25 years of service with the company.

Wow – 25 years! That seems like a long time but when you enjoy coming to work every day and keeping customers’ homes and businesses pest-free, the days fly by! In fact, over 10% of our team has been with us over 25 years – that is dedication few, if any, of our competitors can match.

What a wonderful accomplishment and on behalf of the entire Western family I want to say thank you and congratulations to each of you. We – even Menace Mouse who secretly hopes you all retire and stop chasing him – look forward to working with you for years to come!

Pests Have No Business
 In Your Business

western

I know I should have been at the gym running on the treadmill after all the turkey, stuffing and trimmings I ate, but who can pass up a two-for-one Black Friday shoe sale before 6:00 a.m.?

A great group of guys and gals, members of our Western Exterminator team, were up early too, (like they are every day) but deals weren’t what they had in mind. They’re my colleagues in Western’s Commercial Services Division who service commercial establishments, usually while the rest of us sleep.

From restaurants to food processing facilities to sports venues to cruise ships and trains, hotels and hospitals, they all need protection from unwanted vermin and Western Exterminator, with our team of highly trained pest professionals, has the expertise for success in these types of accounts.

Protecting a business from unwanted pests is critical not only to public safety but also in protecting our customers’ reputation and brand. Every type of business relies on us to be available day or night to treat for pests who want to free-load in these establishments. Where do you think Menace Mouse spends his free time? It’s usually trying to snag a free meal or night’s stay (who are you kidding, he’ll try and move in permanently!) at any outstanding restaurant or five-star hotel, but not on my watch!

The health and economic risks posed by pests are no joking matter. Pests such as rodents, termites and cockroaches not only spread disease but can also cause thousands of dollars in lost revenue by spoiling food or causing structural damage to buildings and equipment. Ever see what a hungry, misguided roof rat and his mates can do to a roof? It isn’t pretty.

Being Thankful For
 the Little Things

history

Ah, Thanksgiving. Turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing and pumpkin pie. Endless football on the television. Friends and family around the table laughing and catching up. I sure do enjoy the holiday; this one just might be my most favorite. My waistline may not think it‘s so great but what’s another hour working out at the gym in the grand scheme of things?

For 90 years, our Western Exterminator Company family has celebrated Thanksgiving, and of course this milestone year is a special celebration.. I am so appreciative of the talents of Western’s nearly 900 family members and the energy and enthusiasm they bring to their jobs each and every day. (It would be fun to have one big Thanksgiving dinner sometime, but that would be one BIG table!)

Whether it is running a nighttime commercial route in downtown San Francisco or fielding customer inquiries about billing or technical questions at our home office in Anaheim, Western’s knowledgeable and personable professionals are ready, day or night, to help customers keep their home or business environments pest-free.

At this time of giving thanks I especially want to mention that what my colleagues and I are most appreciative of is you – our customers. Where would we be without you? Since 1921, you are the fuel that feeds our mission to provide consumers in Arizona, California and Nevada with the most environmentally sensitive and comprehensive lineup of pest management solutions, while always exceeding your expectations with quality service delivered by the West’s most professional men and women.

You have entrusted us to protect your biggest investment, your home, and your most precious possession, your families, from unwanted and unhealthy pests. Business owners and government officials have called upon us to keep their restaurants, hospitals, schools and grocery stores pest-free so they can provide the necessary goods and services we all need day in and day out.

Who wants to shop in a store, watch a sporting event, see a movie, take a cruise, eat in a restaurant or settle into your own easy chair where pests have decided to make their unwanted presence felt? Who wants their child’s school cafeteria to have Menace Mouse and his pals pay a visit? Even they may turn up their noses at Monday’s Salisbury steak special, but the fact is they shouldn’t have intruded in the first place!

When I look back on our 90 years I take great pride in the peace of mind we have given to all of our valued customers. Whenever Western is on the job, the bugs and vermin are gone—guaranteed!  I also fondly remember some of the notable customers we’ve taken care of and the interesting people we’ve met. And because our roots are planted deeply in Los Angeles, we have had the pleasure of calling stars of the silver screen, television and the political arena our friends as well as customers.

Since I do hang in Hollywood’s A-list circles (and I want to stay there!), I won’t name names of current stars for whom I get the bugs out. Mr. Little does not trap and tell. However, there are some legendary Hollywood names from the past that have depended upon Western Exterminator to get the job done on the first take.

Lucille Ball and Bob Hope were two of my favorites.  I fancy myself a bit of a jokester, but these two—let’s just say I thank them for the memories.  Did you know legendary film star Clark Gable was a monthly Western Exterminator customer? He certainly was and his pest problems were “Gone With the Wind” under the tutelage of our pest management experts who serviced his home. No matter the pest that might be giving Gable problems, I recall he certainly DID give a damn if they were in his house.

I remember meeting with Marlon Brando to discuss a rodent problem he had in his house in the Hollywood Hills. While Mr. Brando was quite an intimidating figure in his memorable movie roles such as the Godfather, On the Waterfront and Apocalypse Now, he was very personable and interested in what we could do to eliminate the rodents.

After being buzzed in through the impressive front gate and explaining to his two Doberman pinchers that I was not the paparazzi, I met with Mr. Brando himself in his living room (What a great view of Los Angeles!) and listened as he explained his rat situation.

I then performed a thorough inspection of his home and property (I had a chance to see some awesome movie memorabilia!), and determined additional exclusion work was needed to close up entry points. I provided him the estimate and he said to start the next day and send him the bill. I guess we made him an offer he couldn’t refuse!

But Hollywood film and television stars are not the only A-listers that Western Exterminator Company has taken care of over the years. We can proudly claim to have removed the pests from the homes of former U.S. presidents. Yes, even presidents have pests!

Presidents Ronald Reagan and Richard Nixon both had their homes in Southern California serviced by our expertly trained Technicians, which required all who went to their properties to get Secret Service security clearance. In fact, the Secret Service would often confuse me with an important Senator or dignitary because of my sharp looking top hat!

Of course, not all of our customers are movie stars or former leaders of the free world. But they are all very important to us!  They are your friends and family, your neighbors, co-workers, kid’s teachers, the barista at your local coffee shop, and Little League coaches. We are truly thankful they trust their home or business pest management needs to Western.  And at this special time of thanksgiving, and on the occasion of our 90th year, we want to say just that—Thank you!

Do you have a Western Exterminator story you want to share with me? I want to hear it. You can send me an e-mail at AskMrLittle@WesternExterminator.com and tell me.

Until next time, thanks for making Western Exterminator Company “The Final Word in Pest Control®”

Do You Know Mr. Little?

mrlittle

I’ve been riding along on our yellow service trucks for decades. My 17 ½ foot image soars high above the Hollywood Freeway in Los Angeles, along the Bayshore Freeway outside of San Francisco and rises above our office in Phoenix.

An 8 foot version of me travels around cities throughout the West every day, and can be seen above our offices in Las Vegas and near Los Angeles International Airport. I can’t tell you how many television commercials and newspaper ads I’ve been in (OK, it’s been a lot!). And I’ve been in the movies but more on that later.

I am Mr. Little, the man in the top hat with hammer in hand having a heart-to-heart talk with my little friend Menace Mouse.  He’s actually more of an acquaintance but we’ve been having an ongoing dialogue since 1931 and after all these years, I’ve decided to strike up a conversation with you – our customers – while still keeping a close eye on him.

We met last week when I was telling you about my arachnid friends at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County and how much I enjoyed watching and learning more about them at the museum’s Spider Pavilion. While the pavilion has closed for this year (I hope you were able to visit my creepy crawly but very cool spider friends!), it will be back and spinning a new web next year with the support of Western Exterminator Company.

After all these years of proudly but silently representing the talented men and women of Western Exterminator, I’ve decided to lift the lid on my top hat and share my thoughts on the fascinating world of pests.

My weekly blog is going to take you on a tour of Western Exterminator Company and introduce you to our people. I’ll also share interesting pest facts and tips on how you can keep nuisance pests from getting too close to your world!

But first let me tell you a little – excuse the pun, I just can’t help being a jokester once in a while – about my background. Back in 1931 when Western Exterminator was only a decade old, representatives from the Yellow Pages told Western’s owners, Carl Strom and Ray Lovejoy, that advertising in the Yellow Pages would improve sales. They said having a logo or trademark would help customers recognize Western better and volunteered to have one of their artists develop one.

Artist Vaughn Kaufman took his pen and created a stunning (my words, not his!) image that hit the mark and became an instant hit. I’ve become recognizable across the country, and, yes, around the world (see what a good PR person can do!).

I was first referred to as “Kernel Kleenup” and then “Inspector Holmes” (a distant American cousin of Sherlock) after a 1964 television renaming contest. Fortunately my colleagues at Western Exterminator, especially Bob Strom, decided that Mr. Little or The Little Man best suited my personality and the rest, as they say, is history.

I mentioned earlier I’ve been in movies – watch a chase scene from Lethal Weapon and you’ll see me atop our landmark Los Angeles Service Center along the 101 Freeway. I hoped to read for a part in a Harry Potter film but didn’t get it since the spell my hammer dished out was a little strong – just ask Menace Mouse!

I actually get many more Hollywood offers than my busy schedule allows, but I did get to spend a month on location this past September shooting a sci-fi comedy due out next fall. I’ll be sure to share any sneak-peak scoop with you just as soon as I can.

I’ve also been on a world tour with Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees and Southern California native sons, Van Halen, but unfortunately for my blog readers, what happens on tour stays on tour.

I also show up at numerous community events in California, Arizona and Nevada to have some fun with customers and fellow bug lovers. And of course none of my Western friends are ever surprised when they see me at our numerous company events. In fact, in between my recent movie scenes I made personal appearances at our three company picnics. I could never miss those – the food is too good and of course I’m with all of my very best friends—my Western Family!

I’m looking forward to writing my weekly blogs and plan on sharing interesting and valuable information about the world of bugs, what Western Exterminator does, the people you’ll meet when you work with us, and about how to keep your home or business nuisance pest free.

But enough about me, I want to hear what you have to say. What questions do have about ants, spiders, scorpions, termites, mice or even the resurgence of those pesky bed bugs? I want to hear them. You can send me an e-mail at AskMrLittle@WesternExterminator.com. I’ll be sure to get back to you right away with an answer.
